5 Tips for Law Students

Law school teaches you how to brief a case, analyze statutes, and spot issues—but it doesn’t always teach you how to build a career. Whether you're a 1L just getting started or a 3L mapping out post-grad plans, here are five helpful tips:

1. Grades Matter… But So Does Your Reputation

Your GPA might get you the interview—but your professionalism, attitude, and work ethic will get you the job. Treat support staff, professors, classmates, and externship supervisors with respect. The legal community is small, and relationships carry.

2. Don’t Just Look for a Job—Look for a Mentor

Find people who are invested in your success. Professors, alumni, former supervisors—these relationships often lead to long-term mentorship (and even sponsorship). They’ll give you honest advice, advocate for you, and help you navigate the unwritten rules of the legal world.

3. Networking > Gunning

Being at the top of your class is great—but relationships will take you further. Go to events. Ask thoughtful questions. Stay in touch. So many opportunities come from who you know and who remembers you, not just what you’ve done.

4. Start Tracking Your Wins Early

Create a simple “brag file” on your phone or laptop: projects you worked on, good feedback from professors or supervisors, awards, even mock trial performances. You’ll thank yourself when it’s time to update your resume or prep for interviews.

5. Career Paths Aren’t Linear—and That’s a Good Thing

Some people go straight to BigLaw. Some go in-house early. Some pivot to policy, startups, or even leave law altogether. Don’t put pressure on yourself to get it perfect right away. Focus on growth, not perfection.

Final Note:

The best thing you can do as a law student? Stay curious, stay connected, and be open to growing!
